Sam Stone holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, with high honors, from The George Washington University Law School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with majors in International Studies and Political Science, with a minor in History, summa cum laude, from Baldwin Wallace University. He also studied human rights and international criminal law at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom during his J.D. and spent a semester during college in Geneva, Switzerland, studying European politics and economics. He has been a member of the Maryland Bar since 2014.

Sam was a law clerk for three associate judges of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He was a summer associate with the global law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP, in Washington, D.C. and Rome, Italy. He also interned for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, and the Honorable Reggie B. Walton, Associate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Sam does consulting for various clients that have included the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), and the Instituto para la Mujer en la Migración (IMUMI), among others. His focus is on public international law—especially international humanitarian law and international criminal law—and the U.S.-Mexico relationship. He has participated in numerous webinars, news programs, and written articles for various publications on those topics.

Sam focuses on developing practical legal abilities among his students (such as written and oral argumentation), encouraging them to question everything—including him! He is convinced that law can be a creative field that goes far beyond a mere memorization of the law. Students of law must always seek to restructure what is already established in the legal system. He most enjoys the teaching aspects of his job, as well as coaching teams of students that participate in moot court competitions.

Since 2019, Sam is a full-time professor at the UDLAP, first in the Department of Law and since 2024 in the Department of International Relations and Political Science, both in the School of Social Sciences. He also served as the Graduate Programs Coordinator in the Department of Law from 2019-2020 and 2023-2024. He has led the moot court program at the UDLAP at national and international competitions. He also organized the UDLAP’s coverage of the 2020 presidential elections in the United States and is part of the team organizing the coverage of elections in Mexico, the U.S., and around the world in 2024.

He was awarded the 2022 UDLAP Medal for Commitment to Education from the School of Social Sciences; this is a recognition granted to only one professor from each school per year.
