Luis Ricardo Hernández studied the Bachelor in Chemistry at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy at “Universidad Nacional de Tucumán” (UNT), Argentina, obtaining his degree in 1990. In this same university obtained a doctorate degree in Chemistry in 1996. During 1997 to 1999 he made a postdoctoral stay at the “Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados” (CINVESTAV) in Mexico City.
From 1990 to date he is devoted to university teaching, first as an undergraduate and then as a professional. In these years he gave undergraduate and graduate courses, mainly in the area of Organic Chemistry. It was as a full-time teacher at the UNT and later at “Universidad del Mar” (UMAR), in Oaxaca, Mexico. Since 2004 to date he serves as full-time professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences at “Universidad de las Américas Puebla” (UDLAP).
Since 1987 he began working in isolation and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites of plants, giving this orientation to his scientific career. He participated in several research projects, in someone as collaborator and in others as director. In 1999 he was honored as Researcher by the National Research Council of Argentina and in 2003 was recognized as National Researcher in Mexico, currently as SNI 2.
One of the research line of Dr. Hernández refers to phytoplaguicides, faced to the isolation and structural identification of phytochemicals with potential pesticidal activity, working together with researchers from other universities and farmers in the state of Puebla, Mexico. Moreover, it is also conducting research on natural products from plants with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic activities, among others. It also researches plant secondary metabolites at trace levels for chemotaxonomics purposes.
Dr. Hernández has 36 publications in international refereed journals, five book chapters and seven publications in the field of teaching. These publications have reported, among other things, the isolation and spectroscopic characterization of about a hundred new natural compounds, three of them with a new carbon skeleton, which was named "sarcopetalano", because it was isolated from the plant Croton sarcopetalus. Also he made several presentations at national and international conferences.
In addition to research, another passion of Dr. Hernández is teaching, to which dedicates much of his time, proof of this are the many students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are under his leadership in the area of natural products.
