Miguel Ángel Reyes Cortés is a PhD in Statistics and Operational Research from the University of La Coruña (UDC, Spain), he has a master s degree in Statistical Techniques from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC, Spain), and a master s degree in Demography from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte ( COLEF, Mexico), and a degree in Physics from the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP, Mexico).

He did a postdoctoral stay at the Center for Research in Mathematics (CIMAT, Mexico), working on issues related to compositional data and functional regression. He served as a research assistant and as an associate professor of Statistics and Population Projections at El COLEF.

His lines of research are varied. He has had collaborations where he has applied novel statistical techniques in biological and agroecological sciences, has participated in population studies projects related to migration and population aging, as well as multidisciplinary projects. His main research focuses on nonparametric estimation of curves. He is currently a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI) level 1.

He considers himself a pragmatic teacher who likes to link theory with practice and real life situations. He is always open to questions and academic debate in the classroom, and treats his students with closeness, simplicity and respect, always within the framework of the rules and agreements of the course. He enjoys interacting with the students and recognizing himself in some of them. He learns by preparing a topic, by designing learning activities or assessments, and tries to find the most appropriate way to make himself understood and keep up to date.

Since 2018 he is a full-time professor at the Department of Actuarial Science, Physics and Mathematics (School of Sciences) where he also serves as coordinator of the Data Science degree at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla.
