CUTTING EDGE RESEARCH
ventional methods to generate feelings of fullness
and freshness in hard candy and chewing gum, with
Mondelēz International (Kraft Foods). An investi-
gation of new feasible alternatives for plastic pack-
aging, geared towards sustainability, materials and
layer reduction, and moisture migration decrease of
multiple phased foodstuffs was also carried out.
In association with Mextrauma S.A. de C.V., the proj-
ect "Desarrollo de remplazo articular de cadera
para el mercado latinoamericano" was conducted,
involving the design, manufactur-
ing and testing of hip replacement
prototypes, production processes,
tools and specialized devices.
Similarly, in cooperation with
Haptos Integrando Soluciones
S. de R.L. de C.V., the project
"Aplicación web interactiva de
información autogestiva que
facilita la movilidad en transporte público urbano
en la ciudad de Puebla y zona metropolitana" was
developed.
Dr Rubén Alejos Palomares, professor of the
Department of Computer Science, Electronics and
Mechatronics is directing the project "Horno de
temperatura regulable para caracterización de
pañales" for Productos Internacionales Mabe S.A.
de C.V. (MABESA), which involves the development
of a regulated temperature oven to test the holding
time, under stress, of diaper tapes in order to deter-
mine the lifespan of baby diapers.
Dr René Lara Díaz, professor of the Department Of
Chemical, Food and Environmental Engineering,
is directing a research project with Puebla State
Ministry for Rural Development to determine the
production levels of tejocote pectin to increase the
market value of agricultural products.
Through the research project "CASES: Customised
Advisory Services for Energy-Efficient Manufactur-
ing Systems", financed by FP7 Program People-IRSES,
intelligent designs and efficient manufacturing
services are being developed which will provide
companies with new business and technical models
to calculate, simulate and optimize energy consump-
tion through the creation of a forecasting model that
is profitable, efficient and online, adequate to the
needs of world organizations. Dr José Luis Zechinelli
Martini, professor of the Department of Computer
Science, Electronics and Mechatronics, directs this
project.
Carlos Acosta Mejía, professor of the Department
of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering, heads
the project "Mexico-Texas Trade Corridor Consor-
tium - Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics",
financed by ThyssenKruppPresta de México S.A. de
C.V., to develop manufacturing
and logistics techniques for local
and regional growth, supported
by researchers of Texas A&M and
UDLAP.
Through funding of FOMIX
CONACYT-Veracruz State Govern-
ment, Dr Erick Roberto Bandala
González, professor of the Depart-
ment of Civil and Environmental Engineering, heads
the research project "Identificación, cuantificación
y remoción de compuestos orgánicos y patógenos
persistentes en agua y suelo contaminado mediante
procesos avanzados de oxidación", to prepare, struc-
turally characterize and apply new nano-structured
materials in the oxidation of organic compounds, as
well as in deactivating water pathogens, using solar
power as an energy source.
The project "Modelos de Precio de Información Com-
pleta (MPIC): Estrategias de TIC para Promover el
Desarrollo Local y Regional" looks for technological
solutions to facilitate communication between con-
sumers and supply chains, promoting better decision
making and sustainable consumption. This project
is funded by CONACYT and directed by Dr Luis Felipe
Luna Reyes, professor of the Department of Business
Administration.
Dr Francois Duhamel, professor of the Department of
International Business Administration, is directing
the project "Papel de los 4PL´S (Fourth Party Logis-
tics) en las Actividades Logísticas de las Empresas
de la Región de Puebla" funded by CONACYT, that
aims to contribute to the theoretical and practical
knowledge of 4PL´s and the anticipation of the role
they will play in the coming years in a regional logis-
tics context.
