Professor Cecilia Anaya Berríos obtained her Licenciatura degree in Chemistry from Universidad Iberoamericana in 1978. She worked at Ciba Geigy in Mexico City in 1979. Since 1982 she became a Faculty member of Universidad de las Américas, Puebla (UDLAP). In 1986, she got a leave of absence to join to Professor Henning Hopf research group in the Institute in Organic Chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. Then she earned a Master degree in Chemistry from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla in 1992. She earned the Doctor of Science in Organic Chemistry in 1997 from the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CINVESTAV IPN, for its Spanish acronym). During 2003-2004 she got a leave of absence to join as Visiting Scholar in Dr. Patrick J. Walsh research group at the Department of Chemistry at University of Pennsylvania, USA. Then in 2005 she received a Fulbright-Garcia Robles scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in Dr. Patrick J. Walsh research group.
Dr. Anaya has held several positions at the Universidad de las Américas, Puebla. She was Chair of the Chemistry and Biology Department for four years; Director of the Center for Biological Chemist Research for two years; Vice President for Research, Graduate Studies and University Extension in 2008 - 2010, Academic Vice President in 2010 - 2021 and she has held the position of Interim President since August 2021.
She is a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI) since 1994, is currently researcher level II. She is also regular member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 2001, and since 2013 she became Fellow of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)
She served at the National Executive Committee of the Mexican Chemical Society as: Academic Vice-Vocal (2007-2008); Academic Vocal (2009); Vicepresident (2010) and National President 2011-2013 She also served as Secretary of the Board of the Mexican Academy of Sciences Southeast Section (2010) and President of the Latin American Federation of Associations of Chemistry (2012-2014). Her research interest focus on the design of chiral molecules with application in asymmetric catalysis using various protocols of green chemistry and use of biomolecules with biological activity.
She collaborates with researchers in Mexico and the United States and she has been granted funds for her projects by CONACyT and the American Chemical Society–Petroleum Research Fund.
