The Medical Surgeon undergraduate program has a vision for year 2027: it is that our graduates evolve into the best doctors in their field: general, specialist, researcher or educational doctor, being that Universidad de las Americas Puebla is recognized internationally for the quality of its graduates, faculty and staff, in a globalized context of social and educative evolution.

The program consists of 12 semesters. The ninth and tenth semesters are of pre degree internships, the eleventh semester is community service and the twelfth entails the degree earning project II.

We are deeply committed to excellence. Our objective is to form the best students of Mexico and America.

To form high level doctors who dominate the processes of the medical, systemic and critical thought through medical research, and are professionally capable of exercising the practice of general medicine, sustained in the common areas: Gynecology Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Surgery and Internal Medicine. Having received a preparation that complements and integrates their knowledge in diverse areas of the field, grants them the competitiveness necessary to pursue graduate studies.

To offer to the student a rigorous educative experience, in an ethical, professional and human manner for the care and the promotion of individual community health, helping to prevent, preserve and/or restore health, by means of a competent scientific professional practice.

The specific objectives of the undergraduate program in Medical Surgeon are best understood approaching them through the different areas in which the curricula is divided:

Physiological
  • To include/understand the function of the human body in all its levels of biological organization, i.e. from the cell to the organ to the system.
  • To compare the systematic function of the organism from its molecular and biochemical base, and correlate it with the clinically relevant information.
  • To value the importance of the environment and the biological agents such as microorganisms and common parasites in medicine, describe its life cycle and morphology, analyzing its prevention, as well as determining health factors of individuals and of their community.
  • To develop the practical abilities of the student through the performance and interpretation of experimental tests that studies the physiological functions of the organism.
  • To integrate the handling and interpretation of the physiopathologic processes, in both sick and healthy conditions, as well as the principles on which they are based. Within the different medical disciplines, recognize the importance and alterations of the normal functions of the individual, like origin of the main syndrome and pathological aspects.
  • To evaluate the importance of the pharmacological knowledge from an initially basic and further on advanced perspective, to understand the therapeutic process.
  • To consider that the perfect knowledge of the bodily functions, its alterations, the relation of the organism with environment and the possibilities of modifying these surroundings, are fundamental to understand and to exercise a high level medicine practice.
Morphologic
  • To establish a relation between the different morphologic disciplines to create an integral concept of the structure of the human body.
  • To perfectly distinguish the different structures that make up the human body from the macroscopic, microscopic and from imaging approach.
  • To differentiate each one of these structures from its embryologic, histologic, molecular and cellular biologic origin, as well as its pathological anatomy.
  • To learn the relations between structure and function; and normality and alterations, from a clinical approach.
Clinical integration
  • To involve critical thought in the teaching-learning process based on the resolution of problems, through the correlation of clinical cases, with a firm grasp on the new tendencies of Evidence Based Medicine.
  • To correlate the physiopathology, the diagnosis and the therapeutic aspects of Trauma, Critical Medicine and Pathological Anatomy, understanding these disciplines as knowledge integrators.
Medical
  • To know that the foundations of medical practice where the exploratory nosology, propedeutic techniques and procedures, the interview, the elaboration of medical history, the clinical analysis and the therapeutic plan are key for the appropriate performance of the medicine profession.
  • To interpret the language of the patient and to translate it to medical terminology and vice versa.
  • To understand Internal Medicine as one of the four pillars of medicine, in which an important number of medical specialties has had their growth and where the diagnosis and/or focused treatment is fundamentally medicinal and not surgical.
  • To correlate the pathophisiology , the diagnosis and the therapeutic aspects of the different disciplines: Genetics, Cardiology, Pneumology Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Infectology, Dermatology, Nutrition and Metabolism, Clinical Immunology, Hematology, Psychiatry, Geriatrics and Medical Oncology.
  • To understand Pediatrics as one of the four pillars of medicine, in which an important number of medical specialties has had their growth and whose diagnosis and/or focused treatment are fundamental.
  • To establish as a priority the health of infants as the base of the development of the community.
  • To acquire and to develop the knowledge, abilities and attitudes necessary to prevent, diagnose, and establish therapeutic measures and to indicate those of rehabilitation of the most frequent illnesses boarded within the Pediatrics Clinic, from the neonatal aspects, the growth and development, to Adolescent Medicine.
Surgical
  • To understand General Surgery as one of the four pillars of medicine, where an important number of medical specialties has had their growth, and the diagnosis and/or focused treatment is fundamentally surgical and non medicinal.
  • To value surgery from its foundations to its specialties as a fundamental part of medicine.
  • To acquire and develop the knowledge, abilities and attitudes necessary to prevent, diagnose, and establish therapeutic measures and to indicate those of rehabilitation of the most frequent illnesses boarded in the Gastro surgery, Urology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma and Orthopedics.
  • To identify Anesthesiology as an indispensable component in the surgical treatments.
  • To choose that the most suitable surgical treatment as another therapeutic resource of medicine and not the only option.
  • To understand Gynecology and Obstetrics as one of the four pillars of medicine, where the illnesses of women and the fetal maternal binomial are boarded in an integral form.
  • To acquire and develop the knowledge, abilities and attitudes necessary to prevent, diagnose, and establish therapeutic and rehabilitation measures or the conditions in Gynecology and Obstetrics from an integrated perspective.
Administration
  • To value the strategic importance of information technology in organizations and develop the abilities necessary to use it as a support for the medical practice and update, for decision making and as an individual competitive advantage or of the health organization.
  • To effectively apply the methods of description of data and to have a firm knowledge of the methods of the statistical inference in which one talks about the estimation, hypotheses test, experimental design, linear models and the way in which they are related to the clinic.
  • To know and to analyze the theory of the administrative process, defining its advantages and weaknesses and the form in which these administrative systems influence the doctor’s task.
  • To understand quality as a continuous process of auto evaluation in two planes, the technical and the interpersonal one, where the important thing is the capacity to assure the attaining of the best possible benefits in the patient’s health, minimizing the risks and striving for the optimal use of the resources available to avoid wastes and to reduce costs.
Socio medical
  • To respect the human rights, the autonomy and dignity of the person. To avoid the inefficiency with patients and beings in general, including the social responsibility of arranging and using the resources with rational, considerate responsibility, in its right distribution, striving for the practice of charity and justice.
  • To establish the importance of the bond between medicine and the legislation in the matter of health in our country, by applying this knowledge in his profession.
  • To value the importance of the epidemiology and public health in the country, from a multidisciplinary aspect, using the model of natural history of the disease in the analysis of the problems of health of the individual, in their genesis and historical-social evolution, through a collective approach.
  • To identify Family and Community Medicine as a key element in the learning environment of all doctors, and as a pillar in their formation.
  • To know the current labor legislation and to identify the risk factors derived from the activities in different areas from work, with the purpose of suggesting preventive measures.
  • To develop aptitudes for scientific research.
  • To develop abilities for the application of the statistical method in the handling and clinical data processing and epidemiology.
  • To identify the characteristics of the organization of health services in its different levels and programs, as well as the doctor’s role in each of them.
  • To analyze the necessity of a collective vision and a preventive and social attitude in the professional exercise of medicine that favors the participation of the doctor in activities and programs of public health.
Humanistic
  • To integrate the cultural and social factors that influence and determine all the phenomena related to health and disease.
  • To understand the humanist approach in Medicine and the present implications of Medical Psychology in the diagnosis and integral treatment.
  • To propose the human being as it bases of medical knowledge prioritizing the concept of “human” in the technique.
  • To evaluate human life from its conception to its decline like the main target of this profession.
  • To evaluate and describe the technological advances in biomedicine as a result of history and medical philosophy.

  • Has ample theoretical knowledge about the human conditions and of the methodology of the profession that makes his actions be of high decisive capacity for opportune decision making.
  • Has scientific knowledge of biological, psychological, humanitarian and social phenomena in such a way that it favors the search of new and better treatments in the practice and therefore contributes to the continuous update and advance of medical knowledge with its daily practice.
  • Shows dominion in the theoretical, methodological and technological aspects that constitute the art of their professional task.
  • Has an attitude of social and professional commitment to promote, to preserve, to improve, to restore and to rehabilitate the health of the human being; in his daily task.
  • Shows a suitable attitude to increase his individual strengths, to recognize the limits of his competition or power, to integrate himself in multidisciplinary teams with other professionals of the areas of Health in diverse multicultural situations, in the best interest of patients.
  • Displays clinical ability, which must be exercised with knowledge, diligence, humanism, prudence and analysis, guiding himself by bioethics that consider the respect for human life as its supreme value and focusing its principles of physical integrity, to the individuals under its care.
  • Dominates the suitable use of information technology; this allows him to be conscious of the medical advances at a world-wide level and continue with his learning in a local and international scope. These abilities transmit and translate into teaching and research activities that impact his community.
  • Possesses skill and reflective capacity in the written and oral communication of Spanish as well as English; spreading in these the results of his research and having ample access to updated information.
  • Has legal, medical, and administrative knowledge to promote the careful use of the discipline’s resources; that turn him into an efficient and effective individual.
  • Has the ability to join national and international labour forces or pursue graduate studies at high prestige institutions.
