Presenting/ Presentando a:

This section features articles about students and faculty who are involved in interesting and unique projects at the university or around the world, including work experience, study abroad and social services. The purpose is to highlight their activities, how they accomplished their goals, and learn something new about a country or culture at the same time. We have also used this space to interview professors and provide more information about some of the programs offered by the UDLA. We hope through this section readers can learn more about work/study opportunities they may be interested in by reading about first hand experiences. The subjects are either interviewed by us or they can write an article about their experiences.

Esta sección presenta artículos sobre estudiantes y profesores que están realizando proyectos interesantes en la UDLA o en diferentes países, incluyendo prácticas profesionales, intercambios, y servicios sociales. El propósito es el de mostrar sus actividades y, al mismo tiempo, la manera en que alcanzaron sus objetivos y aprendieron algo sobre un país o una cultura diferente. Este espacio incluye también entrevistas con profesores para saber más acerca de los programas que ofrece la UDLA. Esperamos que nuestros lectores puedan aprender con ello las oportunidades de intercambio que se les ofrecen leyendo sobre experiencias directas de otros estudiantes. Las historias pueden ser escritas por sus mismos protagonistas o bien redactadas por nuestro equipo a partir de entrevistas.

10 Things I Have Learned In… / Diez puntos que he aprendido en…

This presents 10 interesting things one of our students has learned from visiting another country, including amusing facts, figures or traditions they didn’t know before going there. This section should be written from the point of view of the newcomer, who can express whatever he or she deems relevant.

Esta sección presenta diez puntos interesantes que nuestros estudiantes han aprendido durante su intercambio en un país extranjero, desde hechos divertidos a estadísticas, pasando por tradiciones sorprendentes que desconocían antes de viajar a los diferentes países. Esta sección es redactada por el viajero mismo, que cuenta con total libertad en su composición.  

Cultural Collisions/ Colisiones culturales

This section was created to present different stories about culture shock in an amusing and sensitive way to help others understand the differences and challenges of living in another country. Through humor,  we learn something new about a culture and realize how the little things we take for granted may be miscommunicated, confused or non existent. By sharing these stories we hope to celebrate our differences and increase our tolerance and understanding of different cultures.

Esta sección fue creada para presentar historias diferentes sobre choques culturales de una manera divertida y sensible que pudiese ayudarnos a entender los desajustes y los retos que supone vivir en otro país. Presenta malentendidos y fricciones culturales con un tono distendido y abierto de manera que extranjeros y nativos pueden apreciar la futilidad o sustancia de sus diferencias. Es así como podemos aprender algo de otros países y damos cuenta de cómo diferencias mínimas pueden confundir a unos o ser malentendidas por otros. El hecho de compartir las experiencias de choque cultural facilita, sin duda, nuestra comprensión y tolerancia de diferentes culturas.

Border Crossers/ Franqueadores de Fronteras

The intention of this section is to provide an open forum for the experiences and reflections of individuals we would refer to as “border crossers;” individuals who perceive the world “without borders. ” It is an idea borrowed from Chicano anthropologist Renato Rosaldo, who tends to view (from the perspective of immigration) that each person is a complex hybrid of different cultures, and may not conform to just one. “Border Crossers” are people who are multi-dimensional, intrepid, ambiguous, dynamic, but always tolerant. The section seeks  to present these individual ideas of multiculturalism in depth, in the form of poetry, essays or personal interviews.

Esta sección pretende erigirse en foro abierto para la experiencia intelectual o estética de los “border crossers”, los franqueadores de fronteras, categoría que hemos tomado prestada del estudio antropológico en el ámbito de la inmigración, instituida por el antropólogo chicano Renato Rosaldo, que tiende a ver en toda persona a un ser híbrido y complejo que vive entre culturas sin pertenecer por completo a ninguna de ellas. Los “border crossers” son (somos) seres plurales, caóticos, intrépidos, ambiguos, heteróclitos, incómodos y siempre tolerantes. Esta sección busca, pues, conformar mediante la poesía, el ensayo, la crónica o el reportaje, un ariete contra la autocomplacencia de un multiculturalismo sin relieve.

Your Opinion/ Tu opinión

In this section we pose  a question relating to internationalism to different members of the UDLA community. The objective is to open a dialog and solicit an opinion on topics that are relevant to the international community. We explore the hegemony and politics of living in a globalized world and discover what our colleagues think and feel about the changing international landscape.

Esta sección plantea preguntas relacionadas con el internacionalismo a diferentes miembros de la comunidad universitaria de la UDLA con el objetivo de reflejar las diferentes visiones y los discursos públicos existentes en dicho ámbito. Con ello, buscamos dar a conocer el sentido hegemónico, sea éste crítico o no, que algunos ciudadanos le dan a diferentes temas de actualidad en contextos globales.

Speaking With/ Platicando con

This section includes interviews and reports about professors, students, and other members of the UDLA community who are taking advantage of the international opportunities available at the UDLA, or working on interesting projects relating to multiculturalism and internationalism. In the past we have used this space to showcase a professor and the “Presenting” section to present a student.
